04.05.05 The 1st Key for Adding Value to Your Child's Life
1. Introduce God to Your Child from Infancy
My husband and I made it a point to introduce God to our children from day zero; and were glad when they gave their lives to the Lord at a very young age. As soon as they were old enough, we mentored them to have a personal quiet time and to study the bible daily. In addition, we would discuss a scripture during our family altar each evening and emphasise the importance of knowing and living according to God’s Word as a standard. They therefore grew up knowing God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and Jehovah God as the only true God. We were soon to learn just how firmly grounded they were, the day we were summoned to their school.
On arriving at our children’s school, a teacher complained that one of our children was disrespecting other religions and beliefs. Apparently, the teacher had taught them that all religions were equal a thing which my seven-year-old daughter adamantly, openly and vocally refused, insisting outrightly that Jesus was the only true God and all others were false. Thinking back, I can understand why she was so emphatic, since we had taught her to confess Jesus’ name during the times when she would be unwell. My baby must have witnessed Jesus restoring her health first-hand, from the time she was a toddler. So, for her, she could not take any other deity in exchange for the God she knew. That shows just how powerful the impact of introducing God’s standards affected my child’s personal standard.
The first and overarching standard that you should instill in your children is the importance of having a personal relationship with God and His Word. Find a good devotional that they can follow. One example is the Rhapsody of Realities which we have found to be useful over the years. Personal standards could include humility, self-respect, hard work, self-reliance, time management, not being materialistic, and many others.
