What is Decision-Making?

Decision-making is the cognitive or mental process of selecting a course of action from several options to achieve a specific goal or solve a particular problem. The process involves identifying alternatives, assessing potential consequences of each option and reflecting on values, preferences and beliefs in order to select the final choice. In marriage, ‘decision-making’ is a crucial, ongoing and often complex process that determines the success of a relationship. It involves choosing actions, setting priorities and responding to issues that shape a shared future. Decisions impact the stability, direction and long-term tranquility of a marriage. While poor decisions create uncertainty and doubt, high quality decisions build trust, confidence and security.
