08.03.21 The 2nd Practice for Developing a Healthy Approach to Cultural and Family Influence as You Wait Discuss Cultural and Family Expectations

2. Discuss Cultural and Family Expectations

Discuss cultural and family expectations early and calmly with your partner. Clarity should not be postponed to engagement or marriage preparation. Address matters such as family roles, traditions, marriage customs, expectations about extended family and the values that will guide your home. Approach these conversations with humility and a willingness to understand one another’s perspective. Do not assume that silence implies agreement. Instead, pursue clarity through deliberate conversation. Scripture emphasises the importance of agreement in relationships, asking, “Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?” (Amos 3:3). Addressing these matters early allows both partners to recognise where expectations align and where careful adjustment may be necessary in order to preserve unity.
