4. Establish Shared Values and Goals for Your Future Home

Develop shared values that will govern your future home. Marriage requires unity of belief, not merely unity of emotion. Discuss how you will raise children, observe family traditions, handle ceremonies, resolve disagreements and relate to extended family members. Do not leave these matters to assumption. Take time to define the principles that will guide your decisions as a couple. Scripture illustrates the importance of intentional leadership within a household when Joshua declares, “as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). Shared understanding strengthens stability because both partners are working from the same foundation. Clear agreement also helps protect the home from confusion or conflict when cultural or family expectations arise.
