08.02.10 The 4th Key for Evaluating a Growth or Fixed Mindset in a Prospective Partner
4. Is the Person Willing to Adjust His or Her Lifestyle When Change is Required?
Observe whether the prospective partner is willing to adjust his or her lifestyle when circumstances require change. Does the person make the necessary adjustments when faced with new responsibilities; or does she or he lack flexibility, holding onto familiar patterns even when change is clearly required?
Manoah must have noticed Hazzelelponi’s readiness to adjust her lifestyle when instructions were given. After receiving the directive to observe the Nazarite vow during her pregnancy, she aligned her conduct accordingly, understanding that her son was consecrated from the womb. The expectant mother abstained from wine, strong drink and all grape products, items that were part of normal life and social settings, and avoided anything unclean, including contact with a dead body, even that of a close relative. In her cultural setting, participation in feasts, communal life and burial practices was significant. But since she may not have disclosed to the whole village that she was carrying a Nazarite, her lack of involvement in such gatherings could easily have been misunderstood by relatives and friends, or even have led to her being blacklisted in the community, with claims that she was not willing to ‘rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep’. Even so, Hazzelelponi willingly adjusted her lifestyle in line with the responsibility entrusted to her.
Derrick’s frustration with Norah’s resistance to adjust highlights the strain that develops when one partner refuses to change. Her unwillingness to modify her work habits, even when systems failed and issues like empty shelves or overstocked items arose, demonstrated rigidity rather than growth. This resistance made productive collaboration impossible and ultimately led to her termination.
A growth mindset becomes visible when a partner is willing to make practical adjustments as circumstances change. Such a person understands that adjustment is not humiliation but a necessary part of strengthening the relationship. Willingness to adapt in daily responsibilities, decisions and communication patterns helps a relationship remain stable when life introduces new demands.
