08.01.07 The 1st Key for Evaluating a Prospective Partner's Intellectual Maturity

1. Does the Person take Time to Reflectt Before Responding to Situations?

Observe how the prospective partner approaches situations that require judgement. Does the person pause to reflect, seek understanding and consider possible consequences before responding, or does she or he react quickly under pressure, emotions or assumptions?

Aquila and Priscilla must have recognised each other’s ability to exercise restraint and reflect on issues before taking action. For instance, we will never know how long Priscilla and Aquila sat in the auditorium as Apollos preached. However, given their background as business strategists, it is highly likely that  would have been used to ‘digesting’ information before reacting or responding. I would like to infer that the same would have happened in this case. In Apollos’ case, they both listened to Apollos’ teaching without interruption or prematurely reactions; allowing him to complete what he was saying before they could respond. We do not see them reacting immediately or correct Apollos publicly. Instead, they joined in addressing the matter privately and thoughtfully. After understanding the preacher’s ‘diversions’, the couple intervened by helping him to understand ‘God’s way more clearly’ (Acts 18:26).

In contrast, Tabitha later observed the danger of unexamined assumptions when Jonathan accepted surface level reports without reflection. He often reacted to situations only after problems had already grown serious. His inability to pause, think and verify information revealed how costly unexamined assumptions can become.

An intellectually maturity partner takes time to reflect, ask questions and consider long-term consequences before making important decisions. The person does not allow pressure or emotions to determine his or her response. Instead, she or he pauses to think carefully, recognising that wise decisions require reflection, clarity and responsible judgement.
