Introducing Intellectual Maturity

Humans were created with mental ability to effectively engage with other beings. In fact, the first mandate that God gave Adam to govern and steward creation could not be executed without the capacity to observe, understand and make sound judgements (Genesis 1:28) That was where intellectual maturity came in.

Time immemorial, the human intellect has shaped the stability and direction of partnerships, yet the role of intellectual maturity in courtship and marriage is frequently overlooked. Many of the choices that shape the course of a relationship are guided by patterns of thought and judgement developed over time. The way individuals interpret information, examine circumstances and respond to complex situations often determines whether a relationship will progress with clarity and wisdom or becomes strained through misunderstandings and poor judgement. 

In this chapter, I will briefly reflect on how intellectual maturity works in our marriage. Using the fictitious story of Jonathan and Tabitha as well as the biblical account of Priscilla and Aquila, we will offer advice on evaluating a prospective partner’s intellectual maturity; and how to develop that kind of maturity as you wait.
