08.03.22 The 3rd Practice for Developing a Healthy Approach to Cultural and Family Influence as You Wait Establish Shared Values and Goals for Your Future Home
3. Examine Cultural Beliefs and Align Them with Your Values
Align every cultural belief with your guiding principles and purpose. Not every cultural practice is harmful, but every tradition should be examined intentionally before it is embraced. Evaluate customs and expectations carefully rather than accepting them automatically. Some traditions may strengthen family life and community bonds, while others may place unnecessary pressure on a relationship. Scripture encourages thoughtful evaluation rather than unexamined conformity, instructing believers to “not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Allow your values and guiding beliefs to direct the choices you make. By examining cultural expectations thoughtfully, you create space to preserve what is wise while reshaping what may conflict with the kind of marriage you seek to build.
