Introducing Growth Mindset

Every courtship and marriage relationship passes through different stages of development. However, the direction of that journey is largely influenced by an individual’s willingness to learn, adapt and grow. In fact, Proverbs 1:5 says (NKJV) “A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,. Relationships flourish when individuals remain open to learning, adjust thoughtfully to changing circumstances and commit to personal development rather than clinging to rigid patterns of thinking or behaviour. Growth-oriented relationships are therefore built by individuals who recognise that maturity develops progressively rather than as a ‘one-off’.

In this chapter, I will briefly reflect on how a growth mindset works in our marriage. Drawing from the fictitious story of Derrick and Norah together with as the biblical account of Priscilla and Aquila, we will offer advice on evaluating a prospective partner’s growth-mindset; and how to develop that kind of mindset as you wait.
