08.03.12 The 6th Key for Evaluating Cultural and Family Influences in a Prospective Partner
6. Does the Person Engage Cultural Differences with Respect and Constructive Dialogue?
Observe how the prospective partner approaches cultural differences. Does the person engage in respectful and thoughtful dialogue, seeking to understand and bridge differences, or does she or he dismiss, belittle or rigidly defend his or her own customs without meaningful engagement or consideration of other people’s perspectives?
Ruth and Boaz must have noticed that each one approached cultural differences with respect, consideration and measured interaction. Boaz treated Ruth with kindness and dignity despite the historical tension between Israelites and Moabites (Ruth 2:8–16). His conduct reflected intentional regard for her as a person, rather than prejudice or cultural bias. Their interaction demonstrated constructive engagement rather than dismissal or suspicion.
Robert was different. The man often approached cultural differences with dismissal and defensiveness. When Caroline expressed concern about the contradiction between his ritual and their shared Christian beliefs, he responded dismissively, shutting the conversation down. The man disregarded Caroline’s concerns instead of addressing them with clarity and respect.
Approaching cultural differences with respect and dialogue is essential in relationships where the two of you come from different backgrounds. A partner who is willing to listen, explain and consider another perspective demonstrates maturity and respect. Such engagement allows cultural differences to be addressed constructively at the level of communication, rather than becoming a source of division within your relationship.
