What are Cultural and Family Influences? 

Cultural and family influences refer to the ingrained values, traditions, expectations and behavioural patterns that are passed down through generations or within a specific community, shaping an individual’s perception and understanding of courtship and marriage, how partners are selected and the roles they are expected to play within a marriage. These influences often define the ‘rules’ in a relationship, acting as an invisible blueprint or hidden script that can guide who a person chooses to marry and the dynamics of that relationship.

The family of origin plays a significant role, as it influences how an individual communicates, expresses affection, handles resources and manages conflict. In some settings, marriage is viewed not only as a union between two individuals but also as a connection between families, with expectations that may influence partner selection and how the relationship functions. These influences operate both consciously and unconsciously, shaping attitudes, preferences and expectations that a person may carry into a relationship.
