05.09.07 The 5th Leadership Practice for Managing Negative Gossip : Promote Positive Gossip

Promote Positive Gossip

Positive gossip is about saying something good about another person; thereby counteracting negative gossip.

Considering Miriam’s story, there were many positive things that God had done through Moses. But surprisingly, although both Miriam and Aaron knew those acts, the bible does not mention any compliments that the two siblings ever gave their youngest brother. Therefore, as a firstborn, Miriam should have used positive gossip to remind Aaron of those victories rather than grumbling through negative gossip.

Our JuaLink story features several windows that could have been used to promote positive gossip. For example, you may remember how Eliya publicised Faraja’s achievements, as it was her that had pioneered the increase in the clientele. So, all the prayer partners had to do was to change gear and focus on Faraja‘s positive contribution to the company’s growth rather than dwelling on her gynaecological problems.

Therefore, create a culture where team members celebrate the achievements of peers as they render services to internal and external stakeholders. Members should be encouraged to acknowledge each other’s talents and strengths, appreciating that each person is an important and unique contributor to the success of the unit, department, organisation or entity as a whole. Plan opportunities where team members can share their achievements; giving recognition where it is due. These positive milestones can be shared in the organisation’s newsletter, on the official website and social media platforms. Also, consider facilitating team members to write something good about each peer; so that they can learn to focus on the good in people. This will bring healing, acceptance and belongingness which will create an environment that will enhance performance.
