JuaLink’s New Board Takes the Bull by the Horns

Soon after installing the new board, the incoming chairman, Niko, ordered an investigation into the cause of JuaLink’s business plight. Before long, it came to light that ‘uncontainable negative gossip’ had caused the exodus of best performers to Bidacom Africa Media; and that Lulu was at the helm of the gossip ring; followed by Obed and several members of the lunch hour fellowship, who apparently denied having contributed to the departure of star performers apart from ‘praying for them’.

The investigation also found that Obed had been recruited on grounds of being a brother to the outgoing chairman; then loaded with the responsibilities of heading the human resource department despite his incompetence and lack of experience. Consequently, the human resource manual, job descriptions and workplans had never been put in place. Further, not only were most employees’ relatives of ‘supervisors’, but the Agency was overstaffed with too many employees compared to the work available. It was also discovered that Lulu had been hired through the back door, being the sister to the outgoing managing director, Njia; and that JuaLink had lost business due to having promoted the publicity officer into a position that required qualifications and experience which she did not have.

So, warning letters were issued to all members of the gossip clique. In addition, the lunch hour fellowship was abolished. The board also directed that all employees should be re-interviewed and only those who were successful be retained on merit. Last but not least, Obed’s and Lulu’s contracts were not to be renewed.

It took only a few months before JuaLink’s limping business started picking up again.
